Dem Ah Bleach!!!
Nardo Ranks’ 1992 dancehall hit proclaimed that he respected black woman who were proud of their black skin and chastised those who were not, but instead looked to chemicals to obtain lighter skin.
Here we are, 18 years later and it seems that this issue is still prevalent across the African Diaspora. Historically, bleaching creams were advertised along with hair perms as a means for individuals of African descent to obtain employment in positions that were commonly offered to those of European descent.
Times have changed, and we are well aware of the benefits of melanin and the detrimental effects of using these products. So why does this problem still persist? The video below attempts to obtain the answer to this question. What are your thoughts?
